1st International Conference on

Sustainable Pharmacy

Strategies and Perspectives in Development,

Use and Emission Management of Pharmaceuticals

April 24-25, 2008, Zentrum für Umweltkommunikation, Osnabrück, Germany

Maximilian Hempel, Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), Osnabrück, Germany

Florian Keil, Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE), Frankfurt/Main, Germany

Klaus Kümmerer, University Hospital Freiburg, Germany

Aim of the Conference

Pharmaceuticals are indispensable for a high quality of life. Their use however also has a downside. In recent years a huge amount of data has been collected demonstrating the widespread occurrence of a variety of active drug ingredients in the aquatic environment and sporadically even in drinking water. Being only insufficiently eliminated in conventional sewage treatment, there is growing evidence that the substances and their metabolites have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms on both the individual and the population level. Given the demonstrated environmental relevance of pharmaceuticals the question arises: What are sustainable strategies to adequately address it?

Green Chemistry has convincingly shown that it is mandatory to examine the environmental relevance of all phases of a chemical’s life cycle. Sustainable Pharmacy is a new vision that aims to take up the lessons learnt from Green Chemistry. In a broader strategic perspective Sustainable Pharmacy would not only foster the resource efficient development of pharmaceuticals which are optimised for both therapeutic efficacy and degradability in the environment. It would also provide support for the sustainable use of the products and give impetus for the implementation of innovative sanitation concepts in order to reduce emissions already at the source.

The conference will for the first time convene the international state of research and discussion in Sustainable Pharmacy. Within keynote lectures, thematic sessions and panel discussions renowned experts will share their knowledge for the identification of key strategic elements of Sustainable Pharmacy.

The conference equally addresses to scientists from all relevant disciplines and practitioners from the fields of pharmaceutical industry, health care, water management and public authorities.
